Eurasian versus Iberian lynx quests

For almost ten years now we have been guiding in Poland to observe large carnivores there. Especially the last two springs we have been very successful there in observing lynxes. The use of a thermal camera has clearly been a game changer. This spring, however, we also had a trip to Estonia for the first time. This mainly with only Eurasian lynx as a target species. There too we scored very well with this rare cat: during every evening session we got to see the cat in the thermal and the flashlight. This for eight days in a row! Some of the better photos from that trip brighten up this news item.

A private trip is also on the program for the coming season. It is beyond doubt that Estonia is even better for Eurasian lynx compared to Poland. Poland, on the other hand, has a lot more bycatch to offer during the search for lynxes. Sightings of brown bears, wolves, wild cats, pine martens, stone martens, otters and beavers at random are more the regularity than the exception. However, the time span of a trip in Poland is longer than that of Estonia. And in Poland one or two good lynx sightings are standard. In Estonia, there can be several sightings within a shorter period of time.

And, to make it even more difficult for you: Spain was also downright fantastic this year (February 2024) when it came to spotting Iberian lynxes in the field. Where we thought we would never beat the number of sightings of seven individuals in 2023, this year we made a number of eight different individuals. And, on top of this impressive number, also the whole picture of patrolling individuals marking their territory, hunting individuals, a mother with a young one from very close range as well as a female that woke up from her hiding place at dusk that completely ignored us while loitering around near the Jandula river. Face to face with lynxes ; it remains a breathtaking experience every time and something we always look forward to!
